And though the topic may be considered somewhat trivial, it is actually very important to understand a language\u2019s textspeak in order to be able to communicate effectively with its native speakers. In Brazil, the language of SMS, WhatsApp and beyond makes use of a great deal of abbreviations, and some onomatopoeia too. Let\u2019s have a look at the essentials.<\/strong><\/h5>\r\n<!-- \/wp:post-content -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:more -->\r\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:more -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\r\n<h5><u>Kkkk\/rsrs<\/u><\/h5>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>\u2018Haha\u2019 and \u2018lol\u2019 aren\u2019t too common in Brazil, so you\u2019re going to see these expressions of laughter instead. The first,<em> kkk(k)<\/em> is the most standard, with three or four \u2018k\u2019s being typical, and any less perhaps a sign of sarcasm. <em>Rsrs<\/em> is more like a gentle chuckle or giggle, to connote slightly more toned down laughter, coming from the word for chuckles: <em>risos<\/em>. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\r\n<h5><u>Vc<\/u><\/h5>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>As you saw in the title, this is just a shortened version of the word for \u2018you\u2019: <em>voc\u00ea<\/em>. It may only save two letters, but it\u2019s extremely common amongst Brazilian texters. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\r\n<h5><u>Vlw<\/u><\/h5>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Short for <em>valeu<\/em>, which is a popular way to say thanks. See below for the more traditional option. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\r\n<h5><u>Q<\/u><\/h5>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>You can\u2019t get more efficient than a single letter, can you? Instead of going through the trouble of writing out<em> que<\/em>, meaning \u2018that\u2019, you can simply type the letter \u2018q\u2019 instead. Similarly, the word for \u2018because\u2019 follows the same pattern, going from<em> porque<\/em> to the succinct <em>pq<\/em>. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\r\n<h5><u>Blz<\/u><\/h5>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Highly popular both in written and spoken language, <em>beleza <\/em>is a greeting as well as a way of saying \u2018good\u2019 or \u2018okay\u2019. When you\u2019re sending a message, the vowels are cut out to save some time. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\r\n<h5><u>Obg<\/u><\/h5>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Here\u2019s the most famous expression of thanks, shortened from<em> obrigado\/a<\/em> to the simple <em>obg<\/em>. You\u2019re welcome. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\r\n<h5><u>Sdds<\/u><\/h5>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>One of the most unique and notoriously hard to translate words in the Portuguese language. People usually write <em>saudade(s) <\/em>to express that they miss someone or something, but its true meaning is a little more complex. In texts, though, the abbreviation is typically shared with someone you haven\u2019t seen in some time and are missing. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\r\n<h5><u>Finde<\/u><\/h5>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>An abbreviation here,<em> finde<\/em> stands for <em>fim de semana<\/em>, \u2018weekend\u2019 in English, which is important to know so that you\u2019re sure to have some fun plans lined up. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\r\n<h5><u>Hj<\/u><\/h5>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Another simple abbreviation short for <em>hoje<\/em>, meaning \u2018today\u2019. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\r\n<h5><u>S\/N<\/u><\/h5>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Back to those single letters. <em>Sim<\/em> and<em> n\u00e3o<\/em>, \u2018yes\u2019 and \u2018no\u2019, get concisely chopped down to their first letters. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\r\n<h5><u>Zap<\/u><\/h5>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Last but certainly not least, the place where Brazilians do most of their texting: WhatsApp. The app itself is not free from its own abbreviation, with <em>zap<\/em> or <em>zapzap<\/em> being the alternative of choice. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>Though there are countless more abbreviations and texting vocabularies floating around the Internet, this list will set you off to a pretty good start.
