Go for it! Taking on a foreign language is a great academic challenge, stimulating the mind whilst also opening the learner up to brand new cultures, communities and cuisines. Nevertheless, if you’re starting from zero it can be a slightly daunting task, especially if you’re planning on doing it by yourself. But no fear, with these helpful tips you should be well on your way to foreign language domination. And don’t worry, Duolingo is definitely not the only option out there.

Phone Settings

A classic. An easy but surprisingly helpful way to get accustomed to a new language is to change your phone’s settings into the new language. It may be a little unsettling at first, but after a while you don’t even notice that it’s not your native language, and have probably picked up quite a few pieces of new vocabulary along the way.

Videos, Series and Films

One of my all-time favourite, and perhaps most underrated, methods to learn a language. You can watch a video, TV show or film either in your native language with the new language’s subtitles, or the other way around, or indeed go full turkey with both the audio and subtitles in the foreign language, when you’re feeling more confident of course. This helps get you comfortable with hearing and reading the new language on a regular basis, meaning that you will feel more brave in attempting real life conversations. I would like to particularly point out the usefulness of YouTube videos in this domain, as they only require a short time commitment, and typically the content is more speech-based as opposed to a lot of scenes without dialogue, which are pretty common in film and TV. If you notice any new vocabulary, you can always pause and write it down, but even if not it’s still a useful experience.

Flashcards

This is incredible for learning vocabulary, because it’s one thing to write down the words and their translation, and another entirely to truly test yourself and see if you’ve learnt them. You can of course do these handwritten on index cards, but if you want to save some time websites such as Quizlet and Anki can help you generate some virtual flashcards. They will also calculate which terms you seem to forget the most and test you on them more, as well as some sites creating tests and other fun ways to study your vocabulary. Flashcards can also prove pretty helpful for learning essential grammar points, too.

Voice Notes

Unless you are lucky enough to know someone who already speaks the language you are learning, this is a strong way to practise your speaking skills, aside from paying for a conversation partner or tutor. You can write down a list of questions or prompts to ask yourself, record yourself answering out loud and then listen back and note down any mistakes or places where you didn’t know what to say. This is a great way to identify gaps in your language knowledge and increase confidence in the aspect of language learning that people often find most intimidating: speaking it!

Grammar Exercises

Whilst learning vocabulary is a pretty simple process, getting to grips with grammar can be a little less straight-forward. After noting down the key rules of conjugation, pronouns, gender and the like, I advise either purchasing a language exercise book or having a good search online to do some practice. After all, it does famously make perfect.

There are certainly many other ways to kickstart your language-learning endeavour, but these tips are a pretty good place to start, and are certainly more doable than jetting over to another country. Remember the importance of studying little and often, because when it comes to languages, if you don’t use it, you lose it. Progress may take time, but reaping the rewards is definitely worth the wait. Good luck, and have fun!

Author: Lucy Singer

Photo by Brett Jordan, available on Unsplash

Thinking about learning a new language?
