Our coverage of last year\u2019s awards is\u00a0here, the 2021 awards are\u00a0here, and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having had its first in-person presentation event since February 2020 because of the still-ongoing\u00a0coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, and was held at the British Library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll be able to embed a video from the event for you at the end of this article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Publishing Perspectives<\/em>\u00a0readers will recall that the\u00a0Banipal Prize for Arabic Literary Translation\u00a0is one of the eight honors in this basket, and always prefers to announce its winner itself, well before the others are announced by the society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can see in our coverage the award made for that one on January 12, honoring both translator Robin Moger and the late Humphrey Davies. Moger was been chosen for his translation of\u00a0<em>Slipping<\/em>\u00a0(Two Lines Press, 2918) by Egyptian Mohamed Kheir. And Davies was honored posthumously for his translation of\u00a0<em>The Men Who Swallowed the Sun<\/em>\u00a0(American University in Cairo\/Hoopoe Books) by the Egyptian author Hamdi Abu Golayyel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The full group of eight awards this year features translation not only from Arabic, of course, but also from French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Polish, and Spanish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The total purse split among these various awards this year is \u00a315,000 (US$18,271)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The 2023 Translation Prize Winners<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Because these awards quickly become confusing, even to those who follow them annually, a quick listing simply of the eight honors can be helpful:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The TA First Translation Prize\u00a0for debut translation from any language<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The John Florio Prize for translation from Italian<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Saif Ghobash Banipal Prize for Translation from Arabic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Premio Valle Incl\u00e1n for translation from Spanish<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Schlegel-Tieck Prize for translation from German<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Scott Moncrieff Prize for translation from French<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>TLS Risa-Domb Porjes Prize for translation from Hebrew<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New: The Great British Sasakawa Foundation Prize for translation from Japanese<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TA First Translation Prize<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the honor (\u00a32,000 \/ US$2,436) for a debut literary translation into English and published in the United Kingdom. It\u2019s always of special interest for Publishing Perspectives readers because it\u2019s one of the programs started with seed money from the highly regarded author and translator\u00a0Daniel Hahn. Sponsored by Hahn and the British Council, this is the one that has the special grace to recognize both translator and editor, a rarity amid all these publishing contests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Things I Didn\u2019t Throw Out<\/em>\u00a0(Daunt Publishing), translated from Polish<br>Translator\u00a0<strong>Marta Dziurosz<\/strong>\u00a0and editors\u00a0<strong>\u017deljka Maro\u0161evi\u0107<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Sophie Missing<\/strong>\u00a0are honored for their work on Marcin Wicha\u2019s book. The translator\u2019s name does not appear to be included on the cover of this book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The John Florio Prize&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a biennial award of \u00a32,000 \/ US@2,436) for translations into English of full-length Italian works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>My Karst and My City, and Other Essays<\/em>\u00a0by Scipio Slataper (University of Toronto Press), translated from Italian<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nicholas Benson<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Elena Coda<\/strong>&nbsp;are the winning translators. Both translators are credited on the cover of the book, and Coda is credited for her introduction and notes on the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Saif Ghobash Banipal Prize for Translation From Arabic<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Premio Valle Incl\u00e1n<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is an annual prize, again of \u00a32,000 \/ US@2,436) for translation of full-length Spanish works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joseph Z\u00e1rate\u2019s\u00a0<em>Wars of the Interior<\/em>\u00a0is the winning book from Granta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Annie McDermott<\/strong>\u00a0is the winning translator of this book.<br>McDermott does not appear to be credited on the cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Schlegel-Tieck Prize<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Schlegel-Tieck Prize is given annually for translation from full-length work originally in German.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It carries a purse of \u00a33,000 (US$3,654).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguin.co.uk\/books\/442086\/where-you-come-from-by-stanisic-sasa\/9781787332782\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Where You Come From<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;by Sa\u0161a Stani\u0161i\u0107 is the winner (Penguin Random House UK \/ Jonathan Cape)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Damion Searls<\/strong>\u00a0is the winning translator .<br>Searls does not appear to be credited on the cover.<br><em>Publishing Perspectives<\/em>\u00a0readers will recall that\u00a0this book won the German Book Prize\u00a0in 2019, carrying a purse of \u20ac25,000 (US$26,955).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Scott Moncrieff Prize<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Scott Moncrieff Prize annually awards \u00a31,000 (US$1,217) to a translation into English from French in a full-length work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sarah Ardizzone<\/strong>\u00a0is the winning translator of the winning book,\u00a0<em>Men Don\u2019t Cry<\/em>\u00a0by Fa\u00efza Gu\u00e8ne, published by Cassava Republic Press. Ardizzone is credited on the cover of the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Publishing Perspectives<\/em>\u00a0readers will recall that Cassava Republic Press\u00a0is an independent house founded originally in Abuja by\u00a0Bibi Bakare-Yusuf. Several years ago, Bakare-Yusuf added a London office to the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TLS Risa-Domb Porjes Prize<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The TLS Risa-Domb Porjes Prize carries a purse of \u00a32,500 (US$3,044) for a translation from Hebrew into English of a work of fiction or nonfiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Linda Yechiel<\/strong>\u00a0is the winner of this year\u2019s honor, for her translation of\u00a0<em>House on Endless Waters<\/em>\u00a0by Emuna Elon (Atlantic Books, Allen &amp; Unwin).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Great British Sasakawa Foundation Prize<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although listed in the society\u2019s material, the Great British Sasakawa Foundation Prize is as yet unawarded. This new honor is intended in the future to go to a full-length work originally written in Japanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The prize is expected to carry a purse of \u00a33,000 (US$3,654). It\u2019s unclear from information in the Society of Authors\u2019 descriptive material how frequently this honor is to be awarded.
